Heritage Restoration in the Algarve
Specialist restoration of historic and traditional Portuguese buildings. We use the right materials and the right techniques so the work lasts and the character survives.
Start a ConversationWhat We Do
Old buildings deserve a careful hand
Heritage buildings in Portugal ask more of the people who work on them. The materials are different, the techniques are different, and the consequences of getting it wrong are harder to undo. A lime render applied incorrectly can trap moisture behind the wall for years. A window replaced with the wrong profile changes the character of a building permanently.
We have worked on quintas, farmhouses, historic townhouses and listed buildings across the Algarve and wider Portugal. We know how to source traditional materials, which tradespeople to call for specialist stonework or azulejo restoration, and how to navigate the regulations that apply to heritage properties.
The goal is always the same: return the building to a condition it deserves, in a way that respects what it is.
“Heritage work takes longer and costs more than a standard renovation. That is not a problem, it is the point. These buildings took generations to build. They deserve more than a week of render and a coat of paint.”

What heritage restoration covers
We work across the full range of heritage and traditional building projects in Portugal.
Stone and Lime Mortar Work
Repointing, structural stone repair and lime render using traditional mixes suited to Portuguese masonry. Modern cement mortars damage old stonework. We do not use them.
Azulejo and Tile Restoration
Sourcing, matching and replacing historic Portuguese tiles. We work with specialist tile restorers for complex projects and can source period-matched replacements from Portuguese manufacturers.
Period Joinery and Ironwork
Restoring or replicating original wooden shutters, doors, window frames and ironwork to period-appropriate specifications. We work with craftspeople who still make things by hand.
Quinta and Farmhouse Renovation
Full restoration of rural Portuguese properties, from structural stabilisation and new services through to finished interiors. Often involves outbuildings, wells, terracing and agricultural structures too.
Listed and Protected Buildings
Experience navigating the planning and heritage consent processes for protected properties. We know what is required and work closely with the relevant authorities to get projects approved and built properly.
Structural Stabilisation
Assessment and repair of failing or compromised structures in old buildings. This often needs to happen before any decorative restoration work can begin, and it always needs to be done right.

How It Works
From first look to finished restoration
Building Assessment
We visit the property and carry out an honest assessment of its condition, identifying what needs urgent attention and what can be phased over time.
Scope and Approach
We develop a detailed scope of work, identify specialist requirements and advise on any heritage consents that may be needed before work can start.
Proposal and Contract
A clear, itemised proposal with a written contract. Heritage projects often run in phases. We plan for that from the start.
Restoration and Handover
We manage the full restoration, coordinate specialist trades and keep you informed at every stage. We sign off only when the work is done to our own standards.
Questions We Get Asked
Heritage restoration in Portugal: your questions answered
What makes heritage restoration different from standard renovation?
Heritage buildings require materials and techniques that are compatible with the original construction. Using modern materials on an old building often causes long-term damage by trapping moisture, causing thermal stress or simply looking wrong. Getting it right requires knowledge and experience that not every builder has.
Do you need special permission to restore a heritage building in Portugal?
It depends on whether the building is listed or in a protected area. Listed buildings and those in conservation zones require prior approval from DRCALG (the regional heritage authority) as well as the local Camara Municipal. We advise on this for every project and can manage the application process.
How much does heritage restoration cost in the Algarve?
Heritage restoration is typically more expensive than standard renovation because of the materials, the specialist labour and the time required to do it properly. Projects vary widely. We provide a detailed assessment and itemised quote before any work begins so there are no surprises.
Can you restore a quinta or rural farmhouse?
Yes. Rural property restoration is one of our specialisms. Quintas and farmhouses often involve multiple buildings, outbuildings, wells and agricultural structures as well as the main house. We assess the full property and develop a phased approach where needed.
Where do you source traditional materials?
We have established relationships with Portuguese lime and mortar suppliers, tile manufacturers, and salvage specialists. For azulejo restoration we work with specialist craftspeople who can match historic tile patterns and glazes. We do not compromise on materials.
Do you work outside the Algarve?
Our base is Portimão and most of our work is in the Algarve, but we have taken on heritage projects elsewhere in Portugal for the right project. Get in touch and let us know what you are working on.
